What Supplies Will I Need?
Please don’t feel overwhelmed by the supply list. You can start with a minimal set of supplies and build as you go. You don’t need everything on the list to begin—many students find it helpful to watch the videos first and add materials based on what excites them most.
Substrates:
- Watercolour paper (300gsm or heavier). Recommended brands: Arches, Canson, or Moleskine Watercolour notebooks.
- Wooden boards or canvases (various sizes, e.g., 10" x 10" or 12" x 12").
- Vintage papers, book pages, or other found papers for collage.
Tools & Mediums:
- Palette, water container, paper towel, and water spray bottle.
- Catalyst blades, palette knives, or household items like credit cards or skewers for creating texture.
- Scissors, painter’s tape, and glue for collage (e.g., Golden Gel Medium).
- Optional: Glazing fluid for creating sheer layers (e.g., Golden Acrylic Glazing Fluid).
Brushes:
- Watercolour brushes: Mop brushes, fine detail brushes, and round brushes (e.g., Princeton Neptune or AFC goat mop brushes).
- Mixed media brushes: Firm bristle brushes in various sizes (e.g., Dina Wakely Media Brushes).
Paint:
- Heavy-bodied acrylics in a range of colours, including:
- Black & white (e.g., Titanium White, Carbon Black, Unbleached Titanium).
- Accent colours like Phthalo Green, Raw Sienna, and Magenta.
- Fluid acrylics in coordinating tones for additional layering.
- Acrylic inks for vibrant and flowing effects. My favourites include Payne’s Grey, Sepia, and Burnt Sienna.
Mark-Making Supplies (Optional):
- Oil pastels, water-soluble crayons, paint pens, or pencils for detail and expression. Suggested brands: Stabilo All, Posca Paint Pens, Caran D’Ache Neocolor II.
Optional Extras:
- Stencils, textured tools, or other embellishments for added interest.
